Reviewing MET Gala Looks

Reviewing Met Gala Looks

By JORDAN GRESHAM

It’s that time of year: fashion’s biggest night. While usually held on the first Monday of May, the Met Gala returned again after two years and, frankly, I’m disappointed. The theme this time was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” and Anna Wintour brought the biggest A-Listers to this $30,000 per person party. But how was the Fashion really?

Although by comparison nothing can compare to 2018’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” looks from Rihanna, Blake Lively, Zendaya, and more, Or 2019’s “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The looks from those nights were outstanding and this year, I have different thoughts.

1. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky

Rihanna is the queen of the Met Gala. The woman literally came as the Pope in 2018, her looks always leave jaws on the floor. But this year… different story. It’s hard to diss the queen but like, she wore a sock hat. Her look was by Balenciaga Couture, Maria Tash, Thelma West and BVLGARI jewelry and she still ate, even though she pretty much was dressed like it was 12 degrees outside. And that must have been a common thought, because her man A$AP was wrapped in a quilt and dressed by ERL. The couple is so iconic, but the looks were questionable.

2. Jennifer Lopez

JLo understood the assignment. Her western- inspired look by Ralph Lauren fit the theme, and she looked good doing it. With a theme as confusing as American Fashion, it’s hard to wear something that really applies, but she did it with no problem. Props to her for that.

3. Timothee Chalamet

Timothee was once called “the best dressed man in the world” (which he immediately denied) but he was dressed very well Monday night. He came in this all white ensemble by Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens, and Converse.

4. Kaia Gerber

Kaia Gerber did look beautiful, but her mother Cindy Crawford is an American legend. With a theme of America, imagine how iconic it would be if her outfit paid homage to her own mother. Some people did pull inspiration from the icon, imagine if it was her OWN DAUGHTER. She would’ve taken the whole Met but she still looked good, and was dressed by Oscar de la Renta so it’s hard to look bad.

5. Yara Shahidi

Yara may always look good, but she looked fantastic on the red carpet. Complete with a Dior dress and veil behind her, this look was one of my favorites of the night. Honoring Josephine Baker, this look was showstopping.

6. Lil Nas X

Lil Nas X pulled a Lady Gaga at this year’s Met Gala. The dramatic appearances were all custom- designed by Donatella Versache, and stole everyone’s attention. He dropped his album only a few days later, and some people think that the gold armour look was an easter egg for it. Knowing him, it very well could have been.

7. Hunter Schaefer

Dressed in Prada, Hunter Schaefer was in all metal at the Met. It was a serve, although I’m not really sure how the alien look correlates to the theme of American fashion but I’ll take it. Some people, including myself, are confused because she stars in Euphoria with Zendaya, and Zendaya didn’t come to the party to continue filming the show. We’ll take it though, because she looked amazing as always.

8. Kim Kardashian

Kim… Girl… what is this. Props to her because no one could go to an A-list party without showing their face and still have people know who they are other than Kim, but this was… something. The all black Balenciaga look was giving Dementor and the memes have been rolling out nonstop. I’ll include a picture below, where people are comparing her to Kendall Jenner’s shadow. Her sister looked amazing, and Kim… looked.

9. AOC

AOC’s dress caused a lot of noise this year. Some people love it, saying that the message made a statement. Others think it’s hypocritical that she’s wearing it at an event that costs $33k per ticket. It definitely made a lot of noise among people, but I think it fit the theme well, by making a political statement, which I was hoping to see more of. But was it too out there for the type of event?

10. Iman

In a Harris Reed gown produced with Dolce and Gabbana, Iman stole the show. She strove to take up space, and that she did, taking up physical and mental space because I have not been able to stop thinking about this headdress since I first saw it. The gold outfit was immaculate and was one of the main looks of the night. Very impressive.

These were just some of the amazing looks from fashion’s biggest night, and just my opinions. If you’re interested in seeing all of them, Vogue compiled all of the outfits of the night on their website.
