Senior Awards Night

As the 2016 school year comes to an end, so does the senior class’s last hoorah. On May 24th, from 7pm-9pm at Talawanda High School, seniors will be honored during the annual senior awards night. These awards differ from the in-school awards which were held on Friday, May 6th and featured each department recognizing individual students.

The senior class awards are held to recognize the top 10 students of the 2016 graduating class during the first half of the program. These students are given small gifts as a token of congratulations. The second half of the program will recognize students receiving athletic and academic scholarships from both the community and universities.

In years past, the two programs were held in one night’s event. Talawanda High School administrators decided to separate the two programs and split them into two different nights for the first time this year because, according to guidance counselor Savannah Schwegman, “The combined program was very long and time consuming.”

In addition to the benefit of the program not lasting as long, English department head Christene Alfonsi said she thought when the event was one night, some of the meaning was lost because the ceremony was so long. “By separating the program into two nights,” she said, “it gives us a chance to really honor each student.

The change will most likely continue for years to come. According to guidance office secretary Jackie Roy, “The senior class awards have been going on since I arrived here over 20 years ago, and will most likely go on forever.”

Senior class awards will be held on May 24th from 7-9pm in the Performing Arts Center at Talawanda High School.
