When Joe Pyfrin was given the opportunity to become the new voice of THS football, and basketball announcer for the games, he was thrilled. “This was a great way to stay connected with Talawanda, and the community,” said Pyfrin.

Growing up at THS gave Pyfrin the experience to get actively  involved with sports. Back in the day, sports meant a lot to him. He participated in football, baseball, basketball and also wrestling.

Pyfrin liked two sports in particular. Baseball was his favorite, and then football. “Sports teach you a lot discipline and responsibility,” said Pyfrin.

After all the years of being involved with sports, and learning how to work hard, learn from failure and know what a good team effort takes, he looked into becoming a coach.

Through this experience, he was able to connect with his players, and was able to spot portiental. “I always feel honored when my players reflect their best potential on the field,” said Pyfrin.

13 years ago, Pyfrin was invited to be a part of the Talawanda Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is where players are recognized for their athletic ability in their participating sport.

The newly unveiled Hall of Fame is located in the entrance gate to the new high school football field. “Being on the committee itself is a huge opportunity to recognize individuals of the athletic program at THS,” Pyfrin said.

Another way Pyfrin stays involved with Talawanda is his teaching of the in-class drivers’ education at Bee’s Driving School in Oxford.

“It is important for me to teach the young drivers responsibility and how to be the best offensive driver while they are on the road,” said Pyfrin.

Originally Pyfrin started doing drivers’ education in 1968 at Talawanda to earn a few bucks on the side.  “After all these years, I have stuck with it to stay a part of Talawanda and to share my past experiences.”

Pyfrin holds Talawanda so dearly to his heart.  He said, because of his years of experiences, he has become the man he is today. His main goal is to stay as connected to Talawanda as possible.

“It means so much for me to give back to Talawanda,” Pyfrin said.  “It gave me so much back in return.”
