Walk to Create a World Free of MS

Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating disease that affects about 400,000 people in the United States alone. The Latin roots literally mean “many scars,” as there are lesions on the Central Nervous System (CNS – the brain and spinal cord) where demyelination of nerves has occurred. The lack of myelin causes nerve impulses to slow down or even stop, causing different bodily reactions.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MS, though there are medications to stop the symptoms. But this is not enough, according to the National MS Society. Their vision is to create a world free of multiple sclerosis. How can you help? Participate in Walk MS.

This Saturday, April 28th, marks the Ohio, Butler County – walk MS: Western & Southern Butler County 2012 event. Oxford’s very own TRI – Community Center marks the meeting place of the event: a 5 mile (or three for lazy people, or one for even lazier) walk to raise money for the National MS Society. This year’s event has achieved $11,143.27—a good dent in the goal of $23,000. But there’s still so much money to be raised.

Even if you don’t feel like walking, you can still donate. Simply click here.

If you want to donate money and walk, or just walk to show support, you can register by clicking the green button. Then click the green Butler County button.

You can register a new team or join an existing one (the author of this article belongs to the team daddio’s crew). Every $100 achieved gets a t-shirt that commemorates the day. Consider joining Butler County for this year’s event and show support for a relevant cause.
