Braves Sweep Harrison in Academic Challenge Season Opener
On Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016 the Talawanda Academic Challenge team swept the Harrison Wildcats in what proved to be an exciting evening in the THS media center. The Varsity team got off to an anxiety-producing start with their first match that went into overtime on a tie. Through the quick buzzing of first-time ac chall competitor Aaron Flick the team won 68-67. Juniors Martin Ganev, Josh Huddleston, and Ed Ingersoll also dominated in the lightning and overtime rounds to bring the Braves to victory. The JV team won with a solid 60-51 lead with a strong showing for first-timers and vets. Varsity dominated its second match winning 61-46 proving fast on the draw in the toss-up and lightning rounds. Academic Challenge is coached by Scott Schmid whose knowledge of almost everything about anything makes him perfectly fit for the role.
The team’s next match is Wednesday, December 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Talawanda Media Center. Spectators are more than welcome to watch what will surely be another exciting evening of brain power.
Academic Challenge coach Scott Schmid and senior Aaron Flick talk strategy (or tell jokes).
Junior Varsity during the four minute alphabet round. Ac Chall has a tradition of sighing in disbelief when the letter is announced after the round.
Members of varsity hold up their “Talanda” sign. It’s also a tradition for Ac Chall members to misspell Talawanda on competition materials.
