THS Lacrosse Team Enters Its Second Year
For the second year, Talawanda High School is fielding its club lacrosse team this Spring.
The program is a relatively new one, this being only the second year for the high school team. However, there have been several new additions to the program, making the outlook for the upcoming season promising.
This is the first year for the middle school team, as many TMS students have gained interest after observing the high school team last year.
There are also multiple new coaches that have been introduced this year. Several of them, including head coach and creator of the club lacrosse program, Cole Ciambro, are current students at Miami University who also play on the various lacrosse teams associated with the university. “There’s been significant interest in the program,” Ciambro said, expressing a sentiment that seems to be shared by prospective players as well as coaches.
This growth in players has been matched by the number of coaches. Currently, there are around fifteen coaches, including both the middle and high school teams, all specializing in various positions of the sport, as well as general play of the game.
There is also hope of a girl’s program next year, further expanding the program from its exponentially growing state. The first year saw only nineteen players that committed and played. This year, with the addition of a middle school team, there are over sixty.
Although several players are returning to the program for their second year, there are also many new players, such as Freshman Ed Ingersoll. “I’m pretty new to the sport, but I’m definitely getting better at it,” Ingersoll said, highlighting the confidence of the team this season.
With a total of seventeen games in the regular season, a majority of them at home, the Braves are hoping for a winning season and for lacrosse to be established as one of Talawanda’s strongest sports. “Lacrosse is great, there’s nothing like it,” said senior team captain Jack Spaulding. “It’s opened doors for guys that they didn’t even have before, like Evan Bartlett, who is going to Hanover to play lacrosse next year, how great is that!”
The high school team currently has twenty-four members spanning all grade levels, and is expected to play its first scrimmage against Oakwood on the March 21. The first official game is on March 25 against Archbishop Alter.
