Nerf Warz 2013

IMG_8133Talawanda students say they look forward to this time of year. Not for the typical reasons, such as, Christmas, presents and new years, but for another reason. That reason is Nerf Warz.

Nerf Warz is played all across the country, and that tradition is no different at Talawanda.

According to the school’s Nerf Warz website, thsnerfwarz.com, the basic guidelines of Nerf Warz are: If a player is shot with a foam dart, they are out. However, there are more specific rules. If a participant is not wearing clothing, the player becomes invincible. There are also safe zones for not being shot, such as work and school events.

The rules state that that teams may have up to ten players on your team, but you do not have to have more than one. “Last year I was on a team of two people, and I think it helped us tremendously not having to worry about other people,” said Senior Tyler Hibbard.

“We have nine people on our team, we think the more people we have means we have a better chance,” said Senior Jessica Tegge. Everyone has different opinions on what is the best way to go about winning.

Seniors Ryan and Adam Vonderhaar are the coordinators for THS Nerf Warz this year. Both agree that 10 is a good number of people to have. “You want to have as many people as you can,” said Ryan.

The time of Nerf Warz can cause students a high level of stress. “I only leave my house when I have to,” said Senior Kyle Sherman.

Not everyone ranks Nerf Warz on the top of their priorities, though. “I want to win, but I don’t let it interfere with sports or other things I have to do,” said Senior Taylor Hamilton.IMG_8154

Students use nerf guns ranging in price, while others use makeshift launching devices. “I use a PVC pipe. It is easy to use and gives great accuracy,” said Hamilton.

Although the Vonderhaar brothers run the site, they will not be playing this year. “We do not want to show bias,” Adam said.

To others, winning Nerf Warz is very important. “My brother won when he went here, so I think it’s very important for me to win, and he still lives at home so I think he will be able to help me win,” said Senior Sam Thome.

Participants can find contact information about “texting in your killz”, team applications, and a countdown of when Nerf Warz will start on the school’s Nerf Warz website.

The game officially starts at 12 AM on January 1st, 2014.
