The Love For Leggings Goes On
Recently, it has been rumored that the popular clothing choice of leggings was going to be banned from Talawanda. Many students said they had overheard teachers and other students mention the possible ban and were highly upset over it.
Twitter was exploding with opinions on the so-called “new rule,” mainly by female students who wear leggings on a regular basis.
“Girl, are you the new leggings rule? Because nobody likes you,” tweeted junior Audrey Lipps.
“This new leggings rule is hilarious because no,” tweeted senior Mary Curme.
According to the student handbook, under Rule 14: Dress and Appearance, “spandex or spandex-like shorts or pants” are prohibited.
THS Principal Tom York, however, said the ban will not be taking place, and does not seem to see leggings fitting in to this rule.
“I don’t see anything vulgar with leggings or jeggings, or even yoga pants. I don’t know where that rumor came from that they were banned,” said York. “I’ve brought it up to the staff, and multiple teachers have e-mailed me asking if they’re illegal in the school, and they’re not.”
Heather Cole, an intervention teacher at THS, said she is happy about the fact that the ban is just a rumor. “I’m happy about leggings not being banned, I think it gives us more time to focus on problems that actually need more attention,” she said.
Cole mentioned that she was told leggings are okay as long as the rear-end is covered by at least a shirt. “If they were to take away leggings, they’d have to take away yoga pants as well – and that’s just a step too far,” she said.
As it stands now, leggings are an acceptable piece of attire at THS, and according to administration they will be for the foreseeable future.
