New Club Offers Outdoor Experiences
This year Talawanda welcomes the Outdoor Club as a new place for students to become acquainted with outdoor activities.
Outdoor Club provides students with the chance to learn outdoor skills, build friendships and develop valuable life skills such as leadership and responsibility.
Juniors Rebecca and Sarah Lockhart are the founders and co-presidents of the club and agree that it’s exactly what was needed for the school.
“We want people to experience what real camping is like,” Rebecca said.
This year’s major activities include: Backpacking, Hiking, kayaking, birding, fishing, ziplining and more.
Many of the activities will be day trips on a Saturday or Sunday, but a few include overnight camping in Red River Gorge, and Old Man’s Cave . Dates for these trips to be announced later.
As a member of the club there are not any obligations to participate in all activities. However, is a great way to make new friends in school and having fun while doing it.
“If you love the outdoors, being outside and want to the learn, this club is for you,” Sarah stated.
Junior Lauren Flum is equally excited about this new club. “It should be a lot of fun,” Flum began, “I’m really excited for the experience; the opportunity to do some real camping doesn’t present itself often. ”
The Lockhart girls agree that the goal of the club is to “ Have fun. Learn new things about the outdoors and for course to camp a lot.”
Outdoor club is not limited to students, teachers are welcome to participate and come on the excursions with the club members. “We’re all going to roast steak and smore’s over an open fire,” Sarah said.
The club meets every other Thursday. The next meeting will be on October 10th, after school in Mr. McWilliam’s room.
…let me know when you’re roasting woodchuck! Mmm!
