Talawanda Women’s Soccer Senior Night
On Tuesday, October 8th, the Talawanda High School Women’s Soccer Team will host their annual senior night game.
The senior night festivities will begin with the announcing of the seniors, their plans for the future and memorable past experiences. They will each walk across the field to accept their traditional rose, from a fellow soccer player of their choice. After the announcing of the seniors, the players will warm up and begin the game.
Seniors being honored are midfielder Maddie Bogard, midfielder Liz Glaser, midfielder/forward Hannah Vollmer, forward/midfielder Ali Yeager.
Bogard has played for the team for four years, playing on the Varsity team her senior year. Glaser has played for the team for four years, playing two years as a Varsity player. Vollmer has played for the team for four years, playing all four years on Varsity. Yeager has played for the team for three years, all on Varsity.
Also noteworthy about the Women’s Soccer Team seniors is that the fact that Yeager is currently in 8th place in the SWOC conference in offensive leaders, with Vollmer in 17th, Glaser in 62nd, and Bogard rounding out the bunch in 70th place.
Talawanda’s current record is 6-9-0, and they will be playing Ross high school, whose record is 13-0-1.
Head coach Dustin Crothers, who gave his opinion on how both teams will play, said, “They say attitude is everything. However, I also believe knowledge is power.”
Crothers referenced the film, Rocky Balboa, saying, “It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
“It depends on how we get up after Ross gives us their best hit,” Crothers said.
Glaser, a captain, said, “Through hard work, anything is possible.”
Both Crothers and the two senior captains, Glaser and Vollmer, say they believe that Talawanda can really compete in the game as long as the players are willing to put forth the effort.
“It all depends what everyone’s mindset is,” Glaser said. “I really want to put up a fight.”
For the seniors, this is the final home game they’ll ever play. “Victory and success come at a cost,” Crothers said. “You’ve had four years to discover how much it will cost, are you prepared to pay that price?”
However, both captains spoke of senior night as something pivotal in their four years of playing for the team, no matter what the records are. “Senior night is a way to sort of celebrate your four years of playing soccer,” Vollmer said. “It’s kind of sad in a way, because it’s my last game. I hope I don’t cry!” she added with a smile.
As the coach sending these four young ladies out into the world, he sends them with this: “It was a privilege to be their coach,” Crothers said. “Decide what your principles are, what your values are…once you decide what they are, don’t trade them for anything.”
The game will be held at the THS stadium and starts at 7:00 p.m. tonight.
