14.5 Questions With Jeff Yuva
I had a chance to sit down sit down with science teacher Jeff Yuva, THS’s “facial hair chameleon,” and hallway musician with Mr. Mattox. Here is what we talked about.
V.S: Where were you born?
J.Y: In La Port, Texas. It was a suburb of Houston. I’m not proud of it, because I don’t agree with the view of where I grew up.
V.S: What were your childhood/teen years like?
J.Y: I was able to have a good childhood, I was able to do a lot with my family and I played football in high school which took up a lot of time.
V.S: When did you get into biology/science?
J.Y: I would say around when I was 10 or 11 years old. I would always read medical books for my enjoyment.
V.S: Who was your favorite teacher?
J.Y: I have two. Mr. O’Conner, which was my high school math teacher, and Mr. Woodmansee, which was my high school social studies teacher.
V.S: What is your favorite bacteria?
J.Y: That’s a tough question. I would have to say tetanus or botulisn. They produce a tiny amount of toxin and yet can end human life in a blink of an eye. One pint of botslisn could wipe out the entire world.
V.S: Who is your favorite scientist?
J.Y: I’d have to say Charles Darwin, for the fact that he stood next to his ideas even though his life was threatened. My favorite idea of his was natural selection.
V.S: What is your least favorite bacteria?
J.Y: That’s tough. I actually don’t have one.
V.S: When did you first learn guitar? Why did you decide to learn?
J.Y: Well I learned bass guitar and guitar my junior year. I just felt like I had musical talent in me.
V.S: Who was your inspiration?
J.Y: My influence was ‘90’s rock. My first band I liked from the ‘90’s was Nirvana.
V.S: What was the first song you learned?
J.Y: On the bass it was “My Sherona” from a learning book that came with a CD and on the guitar I don’t know, It was something with E, G, and C.
V.S: Are you going to do the four chord song this year? Do you think you can add any new songs?
J.Y: No, probably not this year, because fifth period last year was obsessed with it and had me play it all the time. If I thought of any songs, I could probably add some.
V.S: So you’re a soon to be father, how do you feel about this?
J.Y: I’m really excited, I wanna be a good role model, also be someone she can talk to.
V.S: What kind of facial hair do you enjoy the most?
J.Y: This is honest, I’m a facial hair chameleon. I wear facial fair to whatever my mood is.
V.S: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
J.Y: I would choose mind control, so I could get people to do stupid things for my entertainment.
V.S: What do you think about….?
J.Y: What do I think about education. I think a lot of people think of just going to school and learning, but I think of it as learning something and then being able to go through life and continually learn about whatever it is, not just going to school.
