Talawanda Swim Team Wins SWOC
Last weekend the Talawanda Swim team won the SWOC League meet.
“I was thrilled,” coach Steve Pasquale said. “Wilmington has some very talented girls, and so I was nervous about whether our depth would be enough to overcome their talent. Obviously, I had nothing to worry about.”
Pasquale said he was initially worried because of the size of the team this year. With their loss of 12 seniors last year, the size of the team is now a lot smaller. However, he said the boys rose up to the challenge hoping to keep their winning streak alive.
This weekend the swim team is heading to the sectionals meet. Pasquale is hopeful of the outcome. “We’ve had a great week of practice,” he said. “I am hoping to qualify a number of relays and individuals to districts on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.”
Some of the big names for the team are Scott Richmond, Jesus Caraballo, Edgar Caraballo, and Josh Crowder. On the girls’ side are Kyra Reisenfeld, Molly Gloeckner, and Grace Huddleston. All 3 of the relays for the boys are expected to qualify for districts, and two relays on the girls side are expected to qualify, too.
“If everything falls right, the third (women’s relay) may just sneak into districts as well,” said Pasquale.
The dive team is also doing well. “Our new coach Nicole Crawford has worked really hard with the divers and the results have really been there this year.” Pasquale said.
Ethan Coffin finaled at the Classic and narrowly missed making districts by less than a point. Heading into the swimming portion of sectionals for the boys team is already in 2nd place as all four divers placed Tuesday night. Sophie Peterson also finished her season out on a great note by not only making it past the first cut Wednesday night, but the second cut as well.
The boys sectionals meet is tonight at Mason. Girls’ Sectionals are tomorrow at St. Xavier. Next weekend is the Boys Districts on Friday at Miami. Girls Districts are next Saturday at Miami. States are the 22nd and 23rd in Canton, Ohio. Come out and support your Talawanda Braves!
