14.5 Questions with Carol Morison.
I was lucky enough to catch a interview with Carol Morison before the end of her last year at Talawanda.
Joseph DeVaughn: What activities do you partake in outside of school?
Carol Morison: I quilt, I ride motorcycles, over the summer I got a Ural, a motorcycle with a sidecar. I read, and I do crossword puzzles.
JD: How long have you’ve had your motorcycle license?
CM: I didn’t get my motorcycle license until I was 40. I got them because my husband rides. He encouraged me. I’m a fair weather rider. I actually learned how to ride on a Honda Goldwin. My husband sat in the sidecar, while I drove.
JD: What most do you like about the new media center?
CM: I like the windows. I like to be able to see out. It would be cool if the library was bigger, so we could have room for groups of students. I also like where my desk is. At the old school I had to go around the counter, now I’m up front and center. Kids actually come up and talk to me.
JD: Dislikes?
CM: The fact that the noise level is loud when a class is up stairs.
JD: What do you like about reading?
CM: It takes me away to places. I can live in different countries and places. I can have different experiences. When I travel, I read books about the country, so I can get an idea of the place.
JD: Do you travel a lot?
CM: Not as much as I’d like. I’ve been to Ireland, Scotland, last summer my husband and I drove to California and came back. We’re planning a two or three day trip on motorcycle. I’d like to go to Australia.
JD: What’s your favorite book?
CM: That’s a really hard one. Sometimes it’s what I’m reading now.
JD: What’re you reading now?
CM: Unfortunately, I’m not interested in it. It’s called, The Poison Tree. I got it for free because I do reviews, it’s okay, it’s Sci-Fi.
JD: You do reviews? For who?
CM: They’re sent to the publishers group: Reviewers of Young Adult Literature.
JD: What do you most enjoy about riding motorcycles?
CM: You really get a sense of where you are. If it’s hot, you know it’s hot. If it’s cold, you know it’s cold. If you ride by a field of flowers, you smell them. You can really experience the road.
JD: What is quilting?
CM: Quilting is more than a blanket. It’s patterns that you put together with different fabrics.
JD: How long have you been in education?
CM: Over 30 years. I spent 15 years at the middle school as a reading and language arts teacher. I’ve been here for for 14 years. This is my last year.
JD: What’re your plans for retirement?
CM: My husband and I want to just hang out. I want to hang out with my two granddaughters. I would like to go to their school programs.
JD: Where are you planning to travel?
CM: I’m hoping to travel to the parks out west, like the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and The Black Hills. This summer I’m planning to go to the Appalachian Mountains.
JD: Everyday….
CM: I look forward to what I will learn.
