Talawanda Teachers Provide Musical Interlude Between Exams
During the final week before Winter break, students gathered in the rotunda between exams to listen to some of their teachers sing and play guitar to some classic songs.
“We thought it would be a good way to get students’ minds off of exams for a bit and just have fun,” said science teacher Ben Mattox.
Over the course of three days, four teachers participated in the serenades during the twenty minute break between exams. Mattox, assistant principal Chris Rhoton, choir director T.J. Pearson, and science teacher Jeff Yuva gathered each day, Wednesday through Friday, in the high school rotunda to play recognizable songs that students could sing along to.
“The rotunda has such great acoustics,” said Rhoton. “It’s the perfect place for students to gather, and a great place for sound,” he said.
Mattox and Yuva used to do a similar activity at the old high school. “We’d stand outside of our classrooms and play between periods,” Mattox said. “The rotunda is much cooler.”
And, while this is only the first year in the new building, Mattox said he thinks it may become tradition. “I don’t see why we wouldn’t do this every year,” he said.
Talawanda will be on Winter break for the next two weeks, with classes resuming on January 9th.
