No More Twinkies?
From the famous words of Zombieland character Tallahassee, “Someday very soon, life’s little twinkie gauge is gonna go empty.” Well, this day could come sooner than any of us thought.
I’m sure that at some point in everyone’s life, they have at least tried a twinkie, or some other snack cake that hostess is responsible for making. Imagine taking a big bite of the scrumptious sponge cake known as a Twinkie. Its outer shell is made of moist yellow sponge cake, and it is filled with the delicious creamy inside. Now imagine all that being taken away from you.
The official Hostess brand website states that Hostess “Has been forced by a Bakers Union strike to shut down all operations and sell all company assets.”
Earlier this month, the Hostess company publicly announced its plans to wind down production in bankruptcy court. Not only does Hostess produce Twinkies, but they also make Ho Ho’s, Snowballs, and Ding Dong’s. This means that America’s favorite snack cake is in jeopardy of being lost, but also its popular bread brands such as Wonder, and Butternut.
But don’t start worrying yet, there are over 100 different companies all lined up to buy Hostess’ popular brands such as Twinkies, Ho Ho’s and Ding Dongs.
These 100 different companies have not been named, and some of them are said to be supermarket chains. According to Hostess, they have talked to these 100 companies, so there is a possibility that our beloved snack cakes will not be gone forever.
According to the official Hostess website, “The wind down means the closure of 33 bakeries, 565 distribution centers, approximately 5,500 delivery routes, 570 bakery outlet stores and the loss of 18,500 jobs.”
So not only have Americans lost one of their favorite snacks, but thousands of people have lost their job.
But if you are really desperate for a Twinkie, you can always visit your local Walmart or other grocery store where you can purchase a generic brand.
