Recording Academy Nominations: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

  1. Un Dia (One Day) – J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny & Tainy
  2. Intentions – Justin Beiber ft. Quavo
  3. Dynamite – BTS
  4. Rain on Me – Lady Gaga ft. Ariana Grande – Winner
  5. Exile – Taylor Swift ft. Bon Iver

Here is what I said on this category in November: “I would expect that this award is between Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, and BTS, and I feel it is likely that Rain on Me will win.”

Well, I guessed correctly! This award was one of the many given out pre-show and it was awarded to Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. While I think “Exile” is a better song, I completely understand why it lost out in a pop category, and the win of “Rain on Me” makes sense.

Recording Academy Nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album

  1. Changes – Justin Bieber
  2. Chromatica – Lady Gaga
  3. Fine Line – Harry Styles
  4. Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa – Winner
  5. Folklore – Taylor Swift

Here is what I said on this category in November: “I think this award is really between Dua Lipa and Taylor, but honestly Future Nostalgia is the better pop album and will likely win.”

Another correct guess for me! Honestly I completely agree with this win, Future Nostalgia was my personal favorite pop album in 2020, and I think Dua had a great year and deserved this win. Also, given Dua Lipa’s history with the Grammys it isn’t far out to expect her to continue on a winning streak when she is nominated. (P.S. If you haven’t seen her grammy performance, you definitely should. It was one of the best of the night.)

Recording Academy Nominations: Best New Artist

  1. Ingrid Andress
  2. Phoebe Bridgers
  3. Chika
  4. Noah Cyrus
  5. D Smoke
  6. Doja Cat
  7. Kaytranada
  8. Megan Thee Stallion – Winner

Here is what I said on this category in November: “Easily, Megan Thee Stallion should have this award in the bag. She had such an impressive year, and compared to the others on the list, none of them really match up.”

Again, another correct guess for me! This was Megan’s first award of the night and this award was something she completely deserved. If anyone else had gotten this award over Megan it would have been unfair just given the year she had, so I am very happy with this award.

Recording Academy Nominations: Song of the Year

  1. Black Parade – Beyonce
  2. The Box – Roddy Ricch
  3. Cardigan – Taylor Swift
  4. Circles – Post Malone
  5. Don’t Start Now – Dua Lipa
  6. Everything I Wanted – Billie Eilish
  7. I Can’t Breathe – H.E.R. – Winner
  8. If The World Was Ending – JP Saxe ft. Julia Michaels

Here is what I said on this category in November: “I think this award is between Don’t Start Now and Cardigan.”

My first wrong guess! As we got closer to the actual Grammys I began to think “I Can’t Breathe” was in the running, and on Grammy night I was proven correct. I think this award is well deserved and I’m very happy for H.E.R. (who in my opinion was one of the best dressed of the night).

Recording Academy Nominations: Record of the Year

  1. Black Parade – Beyonce
  2. Colors – Black Pumas
  3. Rockstar – DaBaby ft. Roddy Ricch
  4. Say So – Doja Cat
  5. Everything I Wanted – Billie Eilish – Winner
  6. Don’t Start Now – Dua Lipa
  7. Circles – Post Malone
  8. Savage – Megan Thee Stallion ft. Beyonce

Here is what I said on this category in November: “Given the Grammys pattern of awarding previously awarded artists, I would predict that this award will go to Dua Lipa, however, Savage could win given the impressive year Megan Thee Stallion had.”

Another incorrect guess for me! Billie Eilish ended up winning this award, but she spent her whole speech talking about how Megan deserved it. I honestly should have guessed that Billie might win, given the Recording Academy’s previously stated pattern. I don’t fully agree that Billie should have gotten this award, but also Record of the Year is about production and performance and there is no denying that Billie and her brother Finneas have amazing production.

Recording Academy Nominations: Album of the Year

  1. Chilombo – Jhene Aiko
  2. Black Pumas (Deluxe Edition) – Black Pumas
  3. Everyday Life – Coldplay
  4. Djesse Vol. 3 – Jacob Collier
  5. Women in Music pt. III – Haim
  6. Future Nostalgia – Dua Lipa
  7. Hollywood’s Bleeding – Post Malone
  8. Folklore – Taylor Swift – Winner

Here is what I said on this category in November: “I would predict Folklore by Taylor Swift will win Album of The Year.”

A correct guess for me! Taylor absolutely deserved this award in my opinion, as Folklore really showed the range of her writing abilities. Also, this win made her the first woman to ever win Album of the Year three times. There’s no denying that I myself am a huge Taylor Swift fan, so I definitely do have a bias, but I truly think Taylor really deserved this award.

Overall, despite my shock at Grammy Nominations back in November, I think the Grammys this year went pretty well. The fashion was good (minus Harry Styles, WHAT was he wearing), the performances were good (particularly Megan thee Stallion, Haim, Lil Baby, Taylor Swift, and Dua Lipa), and the award show part was entertaining at least (especially when Lizzo was presenting). I hope as the Grammys continue that the Recording Academy gets better at including diversity in who they nominate and award, but I did have a lot of fun watching the Grammys this year!
