Remote Learning: The Benefits and Drawbacks for Ninth Graders at THS

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the class of 2024 is unable to experience the beginning of their first year of high-school. Instead, they have started freshman year remotely through google classroom, Zoom calls, and more. There are both benefits and drawbacks of remote learning. A survey was responded to by 146 freshmen, who were asked to select what they think are the pros and cons of remote learning. 

Pros:

There are multiple benefits of remote learning. Approximately 72% of the people who responded agreed that a benefit of remote learning is that they can sleep longer in the morning. Another benefit of online learning is that you can eat snacks whenever you want to, which around 75% of the people agreed with. Some other benefits that the majority of people agreed with are that they have a flexible schedule, they can go to the bathroom whenever they want, they can sit anywhere they want to attend classes, they don’t have to dress up, and they have more free time to play games or do other fun things. 

Pros

Cons: 

Even if there are benefits of remote learning, there are still multiple drawbacks. Approximately 84% of the people who responded agree that a downside of remote learning is that they miss seeing their friends. Also, around 78% of the people who responded feel that they are missing out on the high school experience. Some other disadvantages that the majority of people agreed with are that they have internet connection problems, they don’t like typing all of the assignments, there are too many distractions at home, they have too much screen time, remote learning is confusing, there is more work, they don’t like communicating through email, they don’t like Zoom, and they are feeling stressed.

Overall, the pandemic has affected us all greatly. Remote learning has both benefits and drawbacks for the freshmen (along with other grade levels) at the high school. Many people agree that the benefits include sleeping in, eating whenever you want, having a flexible schedule, and more. They also agree that drawbacks include not being able to see friends, missing out on the highschool experience, not liking Zoom, and more. Regardless, most of us are trying our best to keep safe and at the same time make the most of this pandemic.
