Big Changes for Talawanda’s Ag Program

The Talawanda Ag program is one of the biggest and best in Ohio.  But, the past year has brought many changes to the program, one of the biggest being the addition of new teacher, Ms. Sara Schmitz.

Schmitz is a first year teacher out of Ohio State.  Born and raised in New Weston, Ohio, she grew up raising animals and  participating in her county’s 4-H program. Ag has always been a huge part of her life.

“Ag is a growing industry where its importance is seen in daily life,” said Schmitz.  “I wanted to be a part of that training.”

For the past 30 plus years, Jack Jacquemin and Dan Zimmerman (who most people know as Mr. J and Mr. Z) turned Talawanda’s Ag program into an exceptional class and learning environment for students.  When both men recently retired, the future of the program seemed unsure.

“We were very worried when J and Z left.” said Megan Richardson, junior FFA secretary.

“As exciting as a new school and a new teacher can be, everyone was really scared when J and Z left us.  But Mr. D and Ms. Schmitz fit in nicely and make things really fun.” Richardson continued.

Mike Derringer, more commonly referred to as Mr. D, came to Talawanda last year after a few years at another school closer to his hometown.  He replaced Jacquemin when he retired.

Schmitz is excited to be here.  She’s already looking toward the future.  “I would like to see this program become one of the top 10 in the state over the next few years.” Schmitz said.

Junior FFA Student Advisor, Taylor Darner said she is also looking forward to the department’s future.

“As an important member of our program, I couldn’t be more excited of where our program may go,” Darner said.  “There’s so many new things that we have. It couldn’t get any better.”
