The Final Coffee House

On May 11th, the last Coffee House performance in the old THS building will take place.

The Coffee House was established in 2003 by English teachers Matt Aerni and Matt Lykins. “I like that it’s a space where students can perform in a non-competitive environment.” Aerni stated.  It was originally  started to raise money to print the magazine, but over the years it has snowballed into something much larger.

The Coffee House got its name from having the atmosphere of an open mic where students would preform and an audience would sit around drinking coffee and enjoying the young talent. “Some wanted a Coffee House every week but I did not want it to lose value. We have 3 a year,” stated Aerni.

“I am pretty sad about it being the last Coffee House at this school, but also because it’s the last one for me,” explained Issac Herrle. Herrle has performed at many Coffee House events in the past.

The Coffee House is a great chance for student to perform in front of a live audience. “I feel like it is a great way for students to show talent, and it allows people to express themselves in a way someone normally wouldn’t see,” stated senior Luke Howard.

The Coffee House had a lot of value to the students who preform in it. “When I first encountered the Coffee House, it was glorious with the crowd going crazy and cheering,” stated Michael Wade Wolfe.  Every Coffee House is unpredictable in what it will bring.

Ezra Saulnier has been preforming ever since his Freshman year. “I have only missed a total of 2 Coffee Houses out of my 4 years of being at THS.  No two Coffee Houses are the same. I think it’s a great thing to have for the community because they are fun and interesting,” he said.  “It’s rad.”

Luke Howard and Justin Nipper both love how positive the atmosphere of the Coffee House is. “I started preforming my Sophomore year. No one judges and everyone has a good time,” explained Howard.

Tickets for this final Coffee House are on sale now and can be purchased all week at lunch or from Mr. Aerni in room 135.
