Cover the… Rain?

Friday, April 20th marked the beginning for the Kony 2012 campaign of “Cover the Night” at the uptown Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Oxford.

As setup began, the rain did as well. The presentation was set to begin at 6:00 p.m. but began a little after 7:00 p.m. Hosted in the uptown pavilion by Phoebe Myers, the event went remarkably well aside from weather.”I think we were really successful. We passed out over 450 posters and got lots of people involved and interested,” said Myers.

There was a collection of 300 rocks, each one representing 1,000 child soldiers to show 30,000 child soldiers kidnapped by the Lord Resistance’s Army (LRA). There were also 4 booths located on each of the corners of the uptown park, each with a different donation box for organizations for helping the cause of child soldiers. Included were Unicef, Amistee International, The Red Cross and Invisible Children.

Many Talawanda students showed up and helped with distribution of handouts regarding child soldiers and Kony 2012 posters. There were many flyers being handed out all over uptown Oxford and being posted on the Miami Campus. “We had a lot of no’s and jokes, but most people would take them,” said senior Claire Winslow.

“Rain or no rain, it doesn’t matter. It isn’t about that. We can Cover the Night in rain,” said senior Liz Ector.

Over all, the event was a success, and whether or not they can remember it, Miami University and the town of Oxford is sure to have a little more information of the Kony 2012 movement.
