Spring Break

For many students, spring break is often regarded as the light at the end of the tunnel after half a semester of difficult classes and an intense workload. But students have shown that stress relief during spring break can come in many forms.

While some head to the beach for a seaside vacation, many decide to use their free time in other ways. Junior Morgan Oakes stated “I went to the rodeo. And I stayed with my friends had parties and had a good time sitting by the fire with my friends. I think we have a spring break so that we have a time to just relax and be away from the stress of school.

Spring break is of particularly good timing.  This is due in part to the last quarter being possibly the most important, as a last chance to improve grade. It also gives the chance to plan some bigger vacations that the normal weekend would permit. Sophomore Cassidy Wilson stated “I slept and stuffed my face with food. I probably gained a few pounds, but it was worth it. I think we have a spring break to give students much needed time to have fun and not worry so much about school for a week.”

Spring break allows for traveling, relaxation, socialization and time for catching up on missing work. Freshman Gabriela Coelho stated “I spent my spring break with my friends. We always have a great time together. We took silly pictures and watched ridiculous movies; we ate pizza rolls at 2:30 in the morning. But that’s what spring break is for. Everyone needs a break. Not just the kids, but the teachers, too. It’s a time for us to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather without having too much homework.”

Some of the elements of the Spring Break tradition also go way back in the customs of American college students and traveling to the coast. However, it took a further technological development to meld them into the cultural icon that Spring Break now represents.

Spring Break, as we know it today, did not begin until the 1960’s. Through the separation of church and state, the local school system was not able to retain the vacation’s original name of Easter break, which is evidenced by how it revolves around Easter.  If it did, however, revolve around Spring, the break would begin near March 20th, the day spring is supposed to start.

Spring break allows students one last break to hold them over for a little over a month of school left before summer break. Which allows everyone including the teacher to come back  to school feeling relaxed and a more stress free.
